WhatsApp has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered feature called Message Summaries, designed to help users quickly catch up on unread chats using its in-house Meta AI technology.
This feature is currently being rolled out to users in the United States who use WhatsApp in English, with plans to expand to other languages and regions later this year.
According to WhatsApp, Message Summaries “use Meta AI to privately and quickly summarize unread messages in a chat, giving users a brief overview before diving into the full conversation.”
The feature is optional and turned off by default. Users can also activate Advanced Chat Privacy to control which chats can be included in AI-powered features. The summarization process is powered by Private Processing, a system launched in April to enable AI capabilities while protecting user privacy.
Private Processing works by handling AI requests in a secure cloud-based environment known as a Confidential Virtual Machine (CVM). This is done through a secure connection between the user’s device and a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) using Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP). WhatsApp emphasized that even Meta and WhatsApp cannot view the actual content of messages during the summarization process.
“No one else in the chat will know you’ve summarized your unread messages,” the company added, underscoring its focus on privacy.
The update comes shortly after the U.S. House of Representatives banned WhatsApp from being installed on government-issued devices, citing security concerns.
