OpenAI Open to Buying Chrome if Google is Forced to Sell
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has expressed interest in acquiring Google Chrome if regulators force the tech giant to divest it due to monopoly concerns.
Nick Turley, an OpenAI executive, revealed this during testimony in a major antitrust trial where the U.S. government is pushing to break up Google, arguing it holds excessive control over the online search market.
Chrome, used by approximately 64% of internet users, is the world’s most popular browser. Despite OpenAI’s interest, Google firmly stated that Chrome is not for sale and wants the lawsuit dismissed.
This case is part of a broader legal campaign by the U.S. Department of Justice targeting tech monopolies in search, advertising, and AI. Google has already been found guilty of monopolizing both the search and ad tech markets and plans to appeal.
As AI models like ChatGPT gain popularity, they increasingly rely on real-time internet data to reduce misinformation. Turley testified that OpenAI previously proposed a partnership to integrate Google Search into ChatGPT, but Google declined. Currently, OpenAI is partnered with Microsoft, which owns Bing and the Edge browser.
Meanwhile, Google is developing its own AI tools like Gemini, competing directly with ChatGPT.
The trial is expected to last three weeks, with major players like Meta, Amazon, and Apple watching closely as they too face antitrust scrutiny.
Separately, reports suggest OpenAI may be exploring the creation of its own social network to rival X (formerly Twitter), although the idea is still in early development.
