Uber Technologies (UBER.N) introduced driverless robotaxis in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with Chinese autonomous-driving company WeRide (WRD.O) on Wednesday, following the partnership they announced last year.
According to Uber, Abu Dhabi is the first city outside the United States to host fully driverless operations on its platform. Passengers who request an UberX or Uber Comfort ride may be matched with a WeRide robotaxi.
The two companies intend to expand service to areas beyond the city center of Abu Dhabi before the end of this year. Uber added that WeRide, which is based in Guangzhou, currently operates more than 100 robotaxis across the Middle East.
